All you need to know about mascaras

Although it is said that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, women today might tend to disagree, considering a plethora of makeup products designed. Whether it is skincare, hair, or makeup products, there is a lot of thought that goes into making these products safe and harmless for us. Victoria Fraser, the director of Consumer and Market Insight at Procter and Gamble busted several myths about mascaras. Let us look at which ingredients are used to make a mascara:

  • Mascara has carbon black and iron oxide pigment.
  • For making thicker lashes, a polymer is added that forms a thick filament.
  • A preservative is also added so that the product stays on for a long time. However, not all mascaras have this.
  • Castor oil, mineral oil, paraffin wax, petroleum jelly, and lanolin are added as thickening waxes.

Types of mascaras

  • Waterproof mascaras: They will not smudge or stay flaky. It would require a cotton swab and eye makeup remover to remove the mascara though.
  • Emulsion mascaras: These type of mascaras may smudge, but they are very easy to remove by rubbing it off or washing with plain water. Always read the label before buying any type of mascara.

What to watch out in a mascara?
Watch out for the preservative named thiomersal, an ingredient that can cause conjunctivitis, eye infections, dermatitis, and rash. The contents are always printed behind the bottle, hence you should always read the label before you buy a mascara. To check if your mascara is smudge proof, check the water content on the label. The lesser the water content, the less it will be smudged or flaky.

Experts advised customers in the US to limit the use of waterproof and smudge proof mascaras that have little or no water content, because when you put extra effort to remove them probably by using oil, there are chances you might damage your eye lash and this causes your lashes to fall.
