Foods to Avoid with Eczema
Eczema is a long-lasting skin condition that consists of inflamed, itchy skin. When having an eczema flare-up, the inflamed skin resembles a rash. Eczema is known as atopic dermatitis. Currently, there are no cures for this skin condition. Some common signs and symptoms of eczema include dry skin, itchy skin, sensitive skin caused by scratching, small bumps that leak fluid, and skin that is patchy in the colors of red or brown.
Though there is no cure for eczema, however, avoiding certain trigger foods can help ease symptoms:
1. Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits contain acid that works against people with eczema. Amines and salicylates are present in citrus fruits. These chemicals are known to cause itchy skin. The acid in citrus fruits causes inflammation.
2. Dairy
Dairy is a common cause of an eczema flare-up. When consumed, dairy directly affects the immune system and leads to inflammation. Dairy is high in calcium. Those who have eczema should avoid eating or drinking dairy as a way to obtain calcium. There are other ways to include calcium in a daily diet, such as supplements.
3. Gluten
There is a protein found in wheat known as gluten. As a result of its large size, the body uses special enzymes to break gluten down. The cause of eczema is currently unknown. Gluten can trigger inflammation when consumed by some people who have eczema. Gluten can cause a flare-up to be worse.
4. Soy
Along with skin inflammation, soy can also trigger eczema flare-ups. Read food labels carefully when shopping to avoid soy. Soy is in numerous food products. These foods are overlooked daily. Some common forms of soy include tofu, yogurt, flour, ice cream, processed meat, and soy milk.
5. Tomatoes
This fruit is rich in natural SMG, amines, and salicylates. Avoiding products that contain tomatoes is highly recommended. Tomato products include ketchup and spaghetti sauce. Tomatoes are loaded with the three main chemicals that trigger eczema flare-ups.
6. Nuts
Many children and adults are allergic to nuts. Food allergies may cause eczema. There isn’t any specific evidence that shows food allergies as a culprit for eczema flare-ups. However, individuals who suffer from eczema have stated that their experience is worse after having consumed foods they are allergic to.
7. Spices
Everyday spices are used to enhance the flavor of food. Individuals who are allergic to spices experience eczema flare-ups after coming into contact with spices. Some spices include cinnamon, garlic, and vanilla. You do not have to eat the spices to experience a reaction. Holding a spice can trigger a reaction. It is important to read cosmetic labels carefully. Some cosmetics are made with spices.
Some individuals choose to avoid allergy-related foods. Eliminating foods is not always recommended. Check with a doctor to find the best route for you.
