Snacks for Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that commonly affects the joints, but can also affect other parts of the body, including the eyes, lungs, hands, heart, skin, and blood vessels. The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis can vary but often include swollen, painful joints, joint stiffness, and severe fatigue. This type of arthritis is considered an autoimmune disorder and occurs when the body attacks the membranes that surround the joints in the body.

Steroids and anti-inflammatory medications are the most common treatments for the disease, but a healthy diet can also help improve the symptoms. Here are a few healthy snacks that can help relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis:

1. Fish

Fatty fish and fish that contain a lot of oils are great snacks for anyone suffering from RA. Fish contain omega 3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties that can help keep the body’s immune system from working in overdrive. Some examples of oily fish including anchovies, sardines, herring, salmon, and tuna.

2. Kale

Kale is full of antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation. Kale should be a part of every rheumatoid arthritis diet and can be eaten in a variety of different ways. Try it raw in a salad, baked into kale chips, or added to casseroles and soups. You can even add it to your favorite chip and vegetable dips for an added dose of nutrients.

3. Walnuts

Walnuts are a great snack, and they are packed with protein, and other nutrients that make them one of the best anti-inflammatory foods for RA. You can eat them as they are, or add them to salads, baked goods, and use them as toppings for ice cream. Walnuts are easy to pack in your lunch or even keep in a backpack, purse, or desk to grab for a quick snack.

4. Berries

Berries also contain natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. They have been found to actually lower your risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis. If you already suffer from the disease, eating berries as a snack regularly, can help reduce the severity of your symptoms. Add them to your cereal, on top of ice cream, or use them as ingredients in your favorite baked goods. You can also drink natural berry juice for the same effects.

5. Olive oil

Olive oil is used to treat a variety of ailments and diseases and is full of nutrients. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties, which make it perfect for reducing the symptoms of RA. While you can’t snack on Olive oil alone, you can use it to make your favorite snacks. Substitute your usual cooking oil for olive oil, or add it to salads, eggs, or hummus. You can also mix it with vinegar to make a healthy sandwich condiment.
