Tips for Cat Food and Treats
Cats love food and treats as much as we do, but there are some considerations to be aware of. Some risk factors to giving your cat too many treats or overfeeding them can include cat obesity which can increase the risk of many types of severe illness. These illnesses and health complications can include many types of cancer, feline diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hypertension, osteoarthritis, faster degeneration of affected joints, urinary bladder stones, and more.
To ensure your cat is eating a well-balanced diet, follow the following advice:
1. Moderation
Moderation is just as important for your kitty as it is for you. They may start begging by meowing relentlessly for treats as they develop a taste for treats, but be careful that you are not giving them an unhealthy amount and limit their treats to two or three times a week.
2. People food
The food you eat is not an appropriate choice for your cat. Some people food can offer certain vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, but people food can make your fur baby sick. Certain people foods that are okay for cats included tuna, chicken, fish, cheese, and liver. Only give them tiny bits as too much could disrupt their digestive systems.
3. Avoid toxic food
Avoid giving your cat toxic foods. Foods, such as raisins, grapes, onions, and salt are toxic for cats. Cats aren’t meant to have the same diet as their owners, so be sure to talk to a vet before giving any non-cat food to your cat.
4. No begging
You want your cat to be happy and it can be so hard to say no to our kitties. As you may have noticed, the more you give in to the cats demands, the more they will continue to beg because it worked the times before. It may be hard to do this, but this can develop bad incessant behavior and create an unhealthy diet.
5. Overweight cats
We love a chunky cat as much as the next person, but an overweight cat can have potential health risks. If your cat does happen to be overweight, cutting treats out isn’t going to do much. Getting your cats diet and health evaluated by a vet may help them on their way to a healthier diet plan.
6. DIY treats and catnip
Catnip is one of the best low-calorie treats you can give to your cat. Purchasing high protein cat treats is one option, but there are also decent recipes on the internet that you could make at home for your cat.
7. Love and affection
Don’t replace the love you can give to your cat with cat treats. Your cat need affection and attention, like most we all do. Make sure you are giving them more love and attention then treats.
